Evelyn Lauder Dies at 75

With the nation awash with pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Evelyn Lauder certainly left her mark.

Lauder, the daughter-in-law of the late cosmetics magnate Estée Lauder, died Saturday at her Manhattan home from complications of non-genetic ovarian cancer, according to reports. She was 75.

It was Evelyn, along with her friend and former Self editor-in-chief Alexandra Penney, who created the pink ribbon campaign for breast cancer awareness in 1992. Lauder learned she had breast cancer in 1989, though she brought little attention to her own battle, instead focusing on women's health in general.

She recently reflected on the campaign's origins, a time when she and her husband, Leonard, paid for the little bows handed out at department store makeup counters to remind shoppers about breast examinations. Evelyn also founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, which has raised more than $350 million.

Oprah has a new favorite thing: Oscaaaar.

In an emotional evening that saw Winfrey wiping away tears and leaning heavily on longtime partner Stedman Graham, the former talk show host accepted the Academy of Motion Picture's Arts & Science's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, given periodically for philanthropic efforts.

"I never imagined receiving an Oscar, especially for doing what is part of my calling, part of my being," said Winfrey, 57, who gave an Oscar-nominated performance in 1985's The Color Purple and was a producer on the films Beloved and Precious.

"If you are not a former colored girl born in Mississippi in 1954," she said, "it is impossible for you to know what this journey has meant."

Prince William Honors Britain's Fallen Soldiers

Kate joined her husband, Prince William, as the royal family led Britain in tribute to the nation's fallen soldiers on Sunday morning.

In a dedication to the U.K.'s dead servicemen and women, William laid a wreath at the leading London war memorial, the Cenotaph in Whitehall.

Kate, meanwhile, stood in a window of the nearby Foreign and Commonwealth Office and watched William, 29, in his gray Royal Air Force uniform. Alongside her: Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. The Duchess of Cambridge wore two poppies, Britain's traditional symbol of remembrance, pinned to her black coat – and she stood with her head slightly bowed during the two minutes of silence.

William, who has lost friends in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, stood solemn-faced alongside the ranks of soldiers, sailors and pilots who attended the memorial, which took place just a few hundred yards from Westminster Abbey, where William and Kate wed in April.
